Calling Trends From The Carpet

In my experience, red carpet season is the “first sign of spring” in the fashion world. Even though it’s a formal affair,  it’s still the first whiff of some of the big ideas for the upcoming season. Sunday nights Golden Globes showed us a few ideas for the spring that have me personally excited. Below are my picks and a few ideas in store now to help you get the look.

  1. COLOR BLOCKING (especially black and white) - was actually my favorite trend as a collective idea. Black and white color blocked gowns made to look like two piece sets reigned the stage. I was transfixed by Rachel Weisz’s Celine, Charlize’s Dior and Kaley Cuoco’s Monique Llhuilier (navy/ white). When considering this idea with my fashion director hat on, I’m loving the idea of black and white separates for spring paired together in a bold way for day and evening and excited by the prospect of all in one versions made to look like two pieces. This feels new again. It reminded me of one of my favorite dresses in my closet from ALC! I am excited to pull it out again this spring.

2. COLOR in a big expansive way. The color palette was inclusive ranging from cosmetic neutrals to the bold saturated brights. The newer shades that caught my attention were the lush lavenders, ernest emeralds and the ray of sunshine brought in my spirit animal (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) aka Rachel Brosnahan. Personally, I’m betting on the color yellow in all it’s expressions for spring ‘19- and yes, yellow has been my favorite color since birth so I’ve been waiting for this moment :-) Let the sunshine in!!

3. EMBELLISHMENT- not as new of an idea but beadwork and embellishment was another major trend takeaway. The beauty of modern beadwork is that you can wear it head to toe and it doesn’t look heavy handed when the rest is simple.  Lupita’s Nyong’o wore a Calvin dress- the best version of this.

4. JUMPSUITS- Julia Roberts reminded us of the simple perfection of the the right jumpsuit. The asymmetrical neckline looks right. It’s utterly fabulous yet so simple. I feel motivated to re-wear my jumpsuits and look for a modern one come spring.
